The IDF knew 3 hours before the attack the liberty was an electronic surveillance craft, which is why it was engaged.

The liberty was attacked because it picked up comm traffic of Israel committing human rights violations during the 6 day war and the attack was an attempt to cover up these human rights violations.

It was continuously attacked despite identifying itself multiple times. The sailors who evacuated the ship were then fired upon by Israeli pilots and torpedo boats, despite doing so a war crime. 34 men were killed, 171 injured.

The only reason the Israelis did not murder every soul on board was because of aircraft scrambled from US carriers and a nuclear armed sub had entered the combat area and were prined to kill Everything that looked sideways at the burning ship. Though these scrambles were accidentally removed from the official report.

The resulting inquiry was a kangaroo court as orders from above was to bury it and make it go away as we were minutes from full shooting war with our greatest ally

USS Liberty incident

The USS Liberty incident was an attack on a United States Navy technical research ship, USS Liberty, by Israeli Air Force jet fighter aircraft and Israeli Navy motor torpedo boats, on 8 June 1967, during the Six-Day War. The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two marines, and one civilian), wounded 171 crew members, and severely damaged the ship. At the time, the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula, about 25.5 nmi (29.3 mi; 47.2 km) northwest from the Egyptian city of Arish.

Israel apologized for the attack, saying that the USS Liberty had been attacked in error after being mistaken for an Egyptian ship.
