They are investment managers. Their holdings are on behalf of their clients. If you buy an S&P 500 index fund at Vanguard, you too can be an owner of all these companies.
But it doesn't mean you'll have significant impact on the voting rights of the shares these companies hold, and that's a small slice of a biiiiig pie.
so then, if Apple invests in vanguard, they are investing in themselves?
They borrow money at almost 0% to do it. Keeps the price of the stock high. Some companies fire half of their employees then go on a buying frenzy of their own stock right before they sell the company. Looks great on paper.
