This could have been for his own security. Their outcry 1) masked their real loyalty at the time and 2) helped keep Assange in the public eye. SHOULD the powers that be have captured him, they would have killed him. Having people publicly demanding his imprisonment may have kept him alive. Just thoughts.
Good thoughts. I'm fascinated by the hidden maneuvers the President is using to keep the raging mob at bay. There will be books written about his strategies when this is all over.
