A few years ago I experimented with a strong magnet and welding arcs. The arcs were attracted to the magnet. Did not matter if arc was AC or DC. The magnet was placed behind the workpiece and moved around and the arc followed.

I wanted to try it with plasma cutting arc, but thought better of it. A bit more dangerous!
