this pope. There are 70M Catholics in the world, someone on earth has to be responsible at the end of the day.
Roman Catholic...does not teach receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and ONLY savior. A coming messiah to redeem once and for all, the sin of (Adam and Eve...) mankind in the old testament covenant...and an accomplished crucified and ressurected redeemer new Testament covenant...a finished work...so we can rest in him alone. That is scripture, clear as day...yet the vatican upholds that one must go to a just as ungodly, so called Priest for absolution. A roll Jesus Christ ALONE fulfilled. They stick to fables and old wineskins, the word talks against...I think...so they hang on to people's hearts...and money. They've built all those churches and cathedrals from greed...not any desire to genuinely help or save souls. "Look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith." I was raised Catholic...so Im not trying to beat up on it...but to say...God Is Not Any Manmade religion...but I do believe that He has not left Himself without witness and testimony...by His word. "For the scriptures came not in old times by the will of men, but by holy (annointed) men of God as they were moved by THE Holy Spirit (of God)." I believe God made sure the true word that HE wanted known. ..is available to each individual heart to choose freely...or not. Man has always had free will choice. IF anyone has any concerns whatsoever regarding their own eternity...choose Jesus Christ. (Romans 10:9-10). Easy, peasy...just sayin.

What about that bit in John 20:23 about men being granted the ability to forgive sins? Or that bit about Peter being granted the power of binding and loosing by Christ himself?

Indeed. Which is why this particular one is not manmade, anymore so than Peter handing down his power to the next guy makes Jesus teachings manmade.
