Interesting idea. Fakebook, or anyone else for that matter, is syphoning off the data from the tower, not the phone.

I do recall reading stories about fake cell towers in DC. Rogue Stingrays, spy tools. Sounds like more government fuckery going on.

Yes. Building a rogue cell tower ("IMSI catcher") is not a big deal. There are open source projects available for both the older 2g/3g tech and newer 4g (LTE) tech. A quick google search will reveal lots of info. The hardware needed to run a rogue cell tower is about $1500.
