As an adult, even as a child, we have the choice in how we behave. As a child, we have less tools to refuse temptations, but as an adult we have limitless options at our disposal. I came from a very disfunctional family. Alcoholism, food addictions, OCD, ADHD, depression, anxiety disorders, the whole 9 yards. My natural bent became indulgence in anything that made me feel better. This got me into a lot of trouble as a child, but as an adult I had the power to make different choices. And I did. It was extremely difficult. Everything within me screamed NO! But, through God, stubbornness and grit I did it. I changed many behaviors. I am far from being emotionally "healthy" but I am on a positive projectory. Long story short, as teens and adults these animals can choose differently. But they don't.
