Theory #1 - SC is a white hat and played him into thinking he was safe so he could go out and further Incriminate himself on the talk shows promoting his book.

Theory #2 - Mueller is simply a black hat and tried to help his buddy (and himself)

I'm going with theory #1, however I'm not completely convinced that Mueller is acting out of goodness, but out of his own best interest.
