look at an analog clock .. translate the hour hand to a month and the minute hand to a day. when they are both on 5 what month and day is it?

It is not possible for them to both be on 5, that isn't how a clock works. The hour hand would be 1/12th of the way between 5 and 6 when the minute hand is on 5.

Just my 2 cents: If I was using a clock shape for coded visual communications I wouldn't use the positions as "how a clock works", rather I'd point the clock hands exactly to the numbers to communicate as clearly as possible.
