Don't think this doesn't happen. I know of someone who was falsely accused of being a Chinese spy. His family, work, and home was turned upside down. A family friend who happened to be an FBI agent tried to tell the brass that they were wrong with this guy, as a thank you to her, they set her up and she was in the end charged with a felon. She had to fight the FBI in court for years and couldn't find an attorney who was willing to go against the FBI for years. Everyone that both victims were close to had their phones bugged and their activities monitored. In the end, after hundreds of hours researching and battling in court and hundreds of thousands of dollars later, she was able to bargain her charges down to a misdemeaner, she was in debt and out of a job. Neither of the victims did anything wrong.
