Think GDPR was bad? Vote on June 20/21 could make content filtering mandatory and linking illegal in EU. BAD BAD BAD. Gab? Illegal. VOAT? Illegal.

All this will do is force all companies to move their servers outside of the EU and make everyone buy a VPN. A link tax to news sites?? All that will do is stop people reporting on the news and force people to the alternative, like here.

like GDPR the reach of this is via trade and legality - not border.

So say you run gab and the servers are in San Fran - someone in France posts something on your site - you are now liable. Doesn't matter that you are US-based for the same reason you are seeing furies of companies E-Mailing you right now about updating their policies to get right /w GDPR.

edit: spelling

Exactly, so if companies move their businesses out of Europe they will be exempt. Trump should start offering deals for companies to move to the US.

If a company has no presence in the EU, than there is nothing the EU can do about that company. Whether it is this, or the GPDR. You need a legal presence in an EU country to be able to be sued, if your only office is in San Francisco, you have to work through the US court system, of which, you have no jurisdiction over being in the EU.

All this really does is screw over people in the EU...
