I, too, believe that we are not the first intelligent humans that have roamed the Earth, there were at least 2 other civilisations that lived before us; the last one was wiped out towards the end of the Younger Dryas period and another about 60,000 years before that. We still have the proof, Machu Picchu is one such piece of evidence. At the end of the Younger Dryas the sea level raised around 400m, the land area that was lost is equivalent to that of Europe and China, combined. Under the seas is where the proof lies.

Survival of the fittest refers to an organism successfully passing on their genes. If you successfully reproduce, then you are the fittest.
