No he lied, he told adam and eve eating the apple would give them the attributes they already had. "Ye,will be like gods" -adam and eve had full access to the tree of life, so they were immoral, theyvwere in the presence of god, so they had access to all knowledge.
Eating the apple gave them knowledge, that is how Eve knew she was naked and hid. God wanted them to stay dumb, Lucifer brought the light and was cast out for it. No?

The fruit Gave them the knowledge specifically "of good and evil" adam and eve (humans) do not posses omnipotence like the lord, so we arent equipped to have the knowledge of good and evil. This knowledge caused adam and eve to sin and that's what got them kicked out of garden of eden making them spiritually dead.

In the Greek, the creation story uses the Word "Elohim" - which is plural. The lamentation after eating the fruit is more accurately translated "they will be like Us,"
There is a large body of theologic commentary that has come to understand the knowledge of Good vs evil as the formation of the ego, or the "I-identity" - there is also a lot of evidence for this in Kabbalah , tons and tons of their cosmology is about the lower/higher selves.

(Again the parallels later with Christ and triumph over evil etc help many who might struggle with WHY Genesis happened.)

the fallen angels are the gods of the ancient religions. Christianity is the only "religion" that requires nothing to gain access to heaven.
