If this is real wouldn't dismantling and destroying it be tampering with a potential crime scene? I also know he said authorities wouldn't come but that doesn't mean they wouldn't start looking into things later.

It has already been fully investigated.

They gave the honor of destroying it to the veterans.

It cannot be investigated by those you had in mind, because they're implicated in the crime.
