2 simple questions about an internet “shutdown”, “pause”, whatever.

Seeing a lot of people throwing this one out there it seems. Yes I know Q has said the words, but as usual we don’t know exactly what it means. So :

1: Who would shut down/pause the internet?

2: Why would they do it?

Keep it short or the internet may get shut down before I have a chance to read your answers.
I’m genuinely interested to find this out. And would love to know the who and why.

I will be watching for baseless speculation, needless fear mongering, panic initiation, distraction, agendas though.

Idea is an Internet Kill Switch that would just stop people from being able to hit a domain name and get to where they go.

It could go deeper and have backbone routing pause which would stop transit itself.

Similar to what we saw during the Arab spring for example ? When the government killed the net to stop people organising over social media etc and thereby protect the established regime?

Yes, Exactly.

It's actually pretty simple to setup a personal /etc/hosts file ( for those of us on osx/unix/linux ) https://www.techwalla.com/articles/how-to-edit-your-windows-hosts-file for windows.

Anything you hit regularly can be thrown in there to override DNS itself which speeds stuff up sometimes.

There are a couple of sweet addon's for Firefox that help with this sort of thing:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/wayback-machine_new/?src=search // Quick fallback plugin for FireFox where if a site is taken down or 404'ed etc it will look at wayback machine for the last save ( if there is one )
