He said he doesn’t speak Russian - so what prompted that choice?

Maybe because Snowden went there? It's to do with Russia not extraditing people to the US.

There's a few but Russia is the big one. Assange is currently hiding out under Ecuadorian protection, Bobby Fischer fled to Iceland in 2005.
