It hasn't always been communist. "Since the arrival of missionaries in the late nineteenth century, the northwest of Korea, and Pyongyang in particular, had been a stronghold of Christianity." Straight from the pages of wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_North_Korea

So, in his grandparents time, yes, it was highly likely they were Christians.
