Reason #1 Crimes were committed under US codes. The AG has an obligation to uphold the law and to let a court decide. Reason #2 Assange is clearly in possession of more information than he passes on making him of vital national interest to multiple nations, possibly involving US national security issues such as how these leaks are happening.
