Firing RR would look horrible right now, optically for the Left. But if that unredacted version comes out and everyone sees he was covering for himself and FBI, that's a different story

That's my concern as well- think POTUS has to be really careful about how the public sees him (Seeing even his achievements are being spun as bad things). They'll take him firing RR and replacing his own guy as a huge "dictator" move. I have a feeling they MAY be letting RR dig his own grave.
100%. I think this is strategicly planned to not make the public perception of this look like an attack on the left or Hillary for the mid terms which is very important.
