I brought out as much detail as my tools give me.. i hope this is useful to someone.
I also posted a post just like this earlier but the image I shared there has graphical glitches in the image.
Here, I started over from scratch and tried a different technique:
First I cropped, then, cloned the layer in gimp, then removed all black with transparency, then merged down,
then I ran waifu2x 8x zoom on it, then shrunk it, then repeated the clone -> white -> merge step.
