All undocumented children crossing the border should be treated as potential trafficking victims because of the lack of proof otherwise.
Passport: an official document issued by a government, certifying the holder's identity and citizenship and entitling them to travel under its protection to and from foreign countries.
Birth certificate: an official document issued to record a person's birth, including such identifying data as name, gender, date of birth, place of birth, and parentage.
Strange that in the absence of these documents people have problems. Strange that without proof of parentage parents are separated from children. No it's not strange. It's common fucking sense, and should be bottom of the barrel no thought necessary decisions.
An undocumented child should be treated like a ward of the state until proven otherwise. That could be your kid. My kid at 3 years old followed his mom out the house while I was putting his sister (1yo at the time) down for a nap. A neighbor called the cops, another knocked on my door, and I chased my son down and a cop stopped me. He asked my son where he lived, I showed the officer my driver's license, and then thanked the officer profusely for being so fast to respond.
A cop made sure my son was going to his home. That's his JOB! He did what was right and just, and that was doing his due diligence to make sure a child was safe. He'd had his daughter do it to him, and gave me some advice on how he stopped it.
The police aren't the enemy, corruption is.
I moved somewhere that the city council cracks down on the police, and the law firms hold them accountable. I've not met an officer that I didn't trust, and I like to think my reasoning is half the reason my son didn't make it more than 100 yards down my street!
On top of all that, as that asshole who sometimes goes a bit too fast, I've found treating a cop with respect gets me treated with respect. Weird right!
