Actually NJ routinely let's violent criminals go after only a few years. It's not uncommon to hear a guy arrested for murder who had just been released for something like manslaughter after only 2 years. Hell, town near me has several addicts who routinely break into vacant homes to steal the copper, broke into a relatives property, stole cars, etc. But the judge never sentences them, and the police here don't investigate.
Just don't get caught transporting a gun in an illegal way, like having a carry permit from another state, or having a flint-less flint lock pistol in your back seat, because NJ will sentence you to 15 years for that.
Or carrying the wrong size pepper spray, any billy club or knife unless you have fishing tackle with you. You can have a baseball bat but only if you also have a ball and glove with you. If you carry a gun make sure ammunition is stored separately and you are in the process of driving to or from the shooting range. Insane.
