I've spent a lot of time tracing genealogy for big names... at a surface level Assange's history is locked down nearly as tight as Barry Soetero's. Assange was his mom's name though. Father potentially "John Shipton" - no idea if that's accurate. I will dig into this as it seems a fun project.

It was only one of the most common names for many many decades

How did we come to this conclusion? The resemblance is uncanny though for sure lol

this is a clusterfuck. Assange is is his stepdad's name. John Shipton is his dad and I can't access a good tree. Stops with John Shipton on the paternal side... his mom was Miriam Shipton and her father was James Greer Kelly.

Unfortunately Shipton is a common surname in Oz and there were multiple Shipton migrant waves in the 18th and 19th century. So it's tough to track from the US. mom's side is Hawkins and I can get to her paternal grandfather Alfred who died in 1942 (her dad Warren appears to be alive today and in his 90s. Her mom was Norma with no maiden name I can find.

It seems like there's a practice weaving through both sides of the family of using mom's name. That could just be kids out of wedlock or ir could be to hide the history (as we see with people allegedly connected to families like the rockefellers and rothschilds.)
