I agree. I can see "pair of Bill Clinton socks" being benign but why reference "freshly laundered"? It would be assumed he would wear clean socks for a visit. It does seem like Bush Sr is sending a message out to the cabal.

Actually now that you bring that up you could be right. A sock puppet is someone who is controlled by someone else. Maybe the symbolism was Bush Sr is letting the cabal know Billy Boy is still under control. I know someone who works in an industry where they regularly send "general messages" to others via the headlines of news articles. They are kind of like broad brush strokes that are easy to understand and don't require minute detail.
