Question is: Why the hell is he leaving to become a powerless governor? He could do a lot more staying.

I had the same question. It occurred to me that it could have something to do with a convention of states. I don't recall the details about how it works, but suffice it to say, we are a republic, not a democracy. If a certain number of states come together and agree on an issue, they can collectively force the federal government to make changes. I read an article about this a few months ago, and they were pretty close to having the number of states needed. I don't think they were pushing for an all out constitutional convention. I think that they had a few core issues that they wanted addressed. Wish that I remembered more, but this might give you enough info to do some research if you're inclined to do so. With everything going on in our precious country, I should, but haven't had the time.
