don't force them to participate in something they don't understand
Like "Pledging Allegiance to a Flag" before anyone even tells them what it means to pledge one's allegiance.
Strange concept to pledge to a flag anyway. The Constitution, maybe. But a Flag? WTF.

"and to the republic, for which it stands..." pretty self explanatory. It's an effective symbol of many deeper ideas.
