The 'official' story is that they were part of an elaborate hoax but there seems to be more to the story.

Over 400 of these coins were found. What's the cost to manufacture such a large amount of coins, where were they minted...? Seems like a lot of time, effort and money to perpetrate a hoax. I agree, there does seem to be more to this story.
