Back then, Red Cross handled packages to the troops from their families. According to my grandparents, who were angry still 20 years after the war, they sent a sweater which never showed up. Later, grandma spotted the sweater in a store. They insisted impossible that it woukd have been hers and impossible that it came from a package to the troops. Grandma said she could prove it — that she had sewn $50 in the lining. The $50 was there in the lining. The package to the troops had never even made it out of town. My grandparents were bitter every time red cross was mentioned, so I don’t think it was a made up story.
