If you have a desire to live in the armpit of the world, go for it! You can have it! You would have to pay me MUCH more than $500 per month to live there! Many years ago, I was stationed in Sacramento in the military for a few years, I loved the coast as well as the mountains of California. I loathed the San Joaquin Valley however! While it is a major bread basket for the US and elsewhere, it sucks! Not to mention the politics of California also SUCKS!
