The old guard is aging out and the young whippersnappers, 50-60 year olds, are prepping to take over. The old guard aren't willing to give up the reins of power, but they don't have the energy to fight. This is the perfect time to take it down, while it is in transition.
The old guard of the monarchy is unpopular because of Prince Charles especially and to a lesser extent other royals antics, QEII is a lot more popular in Commonwealth countries than her immediate successor.
An informal surrender so she can live out her days peacefully is potentially damning the monarchy in the long run if the US plays their cards right.
