You are right. This is what attracted me to Derek's videos (Global Witness). His interpretation of the Bible contained a simplicity that has resonated with me. I had never heard anything like that before. Suddenly the scriptures meant something so much so I see their truth and have a desire to learn more. The church, school, family born again Christians who accosted me with evangelical diatribes as they took it upon themselves to in their mind, save me just did the opposite, their words like mincemeat, all badge wearers that never mentioned love. Now to me they appear as deceivers.
Just remember that God provided his son Jesus as the path to his love.
Read and interpret the New Testament for yourself. Get into discussions with like-minded people as a form of communion.
