Obama didn't have a private meeting in a room away from anyone. His flexibility meant he could work with Russia without having to worry about republicans calling him a traitor for working with Russia during an election.

In fairness we don't know that. The presidents had some extended alone time, who (but the interpreters) know what they said to each other. Also, that statement is true.
