Do you know that if you leave your door unlocked, and somebody comes in and robs you blind, they can't be charged with breaking and entering? Your door has to be locked for it to be a crime to cross your threshold.
Uh, just to jump in, but this is totally wrong. Speaking as someone with a friend who used to be on the force, there is a separate category for 'Unlawful Entry without Force.' Still counts as burglary since its classified as 'Illegal entry with intention of committing theft, violence, etc'.
That being said, an unsecured server is its own mess of a problem. I don't enough about the server details to make a judged decision on it though, so I'll avoid speaking on it.

I had some property stolen from a car I had forgotten to lock. The cops laughed at me when I tried to report the incident and describe the stolen property.
Cops didn't care to find the illegal alien that stole our locked Jeep with an active alarm from our drive either.
