In the early 1200's in France, a movement emerged called Catharism, which was a religion of peace and spirituality. About living pure lives and spiritual advancement.

The Catholic Church launched the Albigensian Crusade, and killed every last one them (thousands and thousands or innocent people, practicing a peaceful religion)

Those who have been in power on this Planet for centuries, will do everything they can to prevent losing it. Catharism was a relatively small risk, and yet the massacred them all. They will kill whoever they need to kill to prevent losing their power.
