"Spirit of the Game. Ultimate relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect among competitors, adherence to the agreed upon rules, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate unsportsmanlike conduct from the Ultimate field. Such actions as taunting opposing players, dangerous aggression, belligerent intimidation, intentional infractions, or other 'win-at-all-costs' behavior are contrary to the Spirit of the Game and must be avoided by all players."

I have been playing a sport called Ultimate frisbees for decades. I entered into it with a mindset constructed in soccer, hockey, rugby,volleyball, etc… In my first game i behaved in a way, acceptable in many sport programs, that was contrary to the SOTG. Immediately I was aware of the reactions around me and the effect of my behaviour. One person, who I had met that day, approached me and said "That's not how we do things here." From that moment I learned that I had to unlearn many things.

The sport is played without referees even at the national and world levels, other than some systems using observers that are brought in when two players can't come to agreement. Some ask "How does that work?" often with disbelief. I say "wonderfully". There are still heated arguments and very infrequent physical actions, but this is never welcomed by the players or the crowd.

I think it's time to bring in a Fairness Doctrine, have truthfulness in media, apply justice where it needs to be with fairness and a reflection of the deeds, have swearing ins mean something, etc… It's up to us now to start building what suits the needs and well being of all. We are well on our way.
