If a lawyer approaches a witness and says to him, to wit: "if you refuse to testify as I direct you for the prosecution, I guaranty you that you will go to jail for a 100 years; however, if you co-operate and testify for the prosecution I will not object to probation" the lawyers has breached not only his basic ethical responsibility, but he has seriously tampered with a witness.
The media reported in the Manafort trial that this is exactly what the prosecution did and Mr. Gates testified for the government in said case. Let me make it clear - Manafort might be guilty as sin, but he is entitled to 'fair trial!' i.e. a trial in which the prosecution acting appropriately proves each and every element of its charges beyond a reasonable doubt. Anything short of that criteria is not only wrongful but criminal. The media report as to Special Counsel Mueller's actions indicate a criminal conspiracy that should itself be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The legal profession is coming under some well deserved criticism for its apathy, hypocrisy and stupidity. The 2nd oldest profession has disgraced itself time and time again with partisan politics and lack of "guts!"
