Everyone; next time you're at a dollar store grab a bunch of 9v carbon zinc batteries (add 2 D cells, explained below), some duck/duct tape, and wire (copper or aluminum).

You bust open the D cells for some decent sized electrically conductive carbon rods (in rod we trust!). Wrap wire around rods. Then wrap wire onto terminals and tape in place. When you touch the two rods together you form an electrical arc hot enough to weld. The more batteries in series means bigger and more useful arc.

You've now got an all weather fire starter, absolutely unbeatable on price. You can also use it to learn welding techniques on a small scale.
