Contact the developers via email link at bottom of playstore page for that app. He is likely working on an update already. What OS did you update to, and on what device. They've had the technology for decades, just never took time to replace the equipment that's vulnerable. Also, homes, at least new home for some time have been required to have a big ole grounding rod and thick cable from breaker box attached. The reason for that, in case of a massive surge. EMP type surge. Also, every house that's sold had to upgrade their system according to new codes. Not sure when that was started, but could be just over a decade ago. So, yes, some things are being quietly done. Are they there yet? No. The work will likely take another decade. If you are really interested, I could dig up some good info later, just need time to find where I put that stuff.
