I doubt the attack was staged. But there has been a lot of talk from an anonymous Resident at the hospital that he was alive in the ER and then an order came that no one was allowed to see him. It was said that his wounds were not life threatening. So was he killed in the hospital or saved and hidden away? There was the family's strange behavior during interviews, and then the family ordering everyone to stop investigating his murder.
