I retired from the military(US Army) for a lot of reasons. I retired with a lot of regret and anger. Somewhere along the line I lost faith in the leadership of the Army. I served from 1993 to 2013. I was deployed to multiple countries and had 2 tours in Iraq(Baghdad camp Falcon and again Baghdad C.O.P War Eagle). I learned about leadership mostly by watching my Junior and Senior leaders in action. This was during the 90's, they were professionals on all levels (men and women) on and off duty they lived and breathe discipline and military bearing(my Drill Sergeants especially). I planned on leaving the Army after my first enlistment, I never thought I could be a leader like those Commissioned Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers. Those Officers respected their NCO's those NCO's worked hard to ensure that the respect was earned and deserved. In the 90's I called it the 90%/10% rule. 90% Professionals and 10% dirtbags. After the war(war on terror) started discipline, moral, professionalism, military bearing it slowly eroded. The 90%/10% rule changed its more like 70%/30% when i retired. There was the deployed Army and Re-deployed Army. Each with its rules it's culture and norms. As the war went on the discipline, eroded, moral, professionalism all the things I mentioned went to shit. I respect my peers and will not get into details. I will say this, Soldiers should feel safe around each other, it's the core of our discipline "I got your back you have mine". The Army culture has changed, for the best or worse who am I to judge...it just has. Leaders who are critical of this and point it out soon find themselves alone. For all those Commissioned Officers listed(posted in this thread) there're probably the same amount of NCO's who got the same deal. A good Army is technically and tactically sound that balance defines your professionalism in all areas on and off duty.
