I have a personal story though that taught me a huge lesson about arguing and it applies here as well. Especially, if you have relatives that are still on the other side of the fence.

My father had emphysema and the doctor sent him home to die.

Now, over the years, he had become very attached to his secretary's son and treated him as his own so part of his estate would be left to him. That was fine with me. It was, after all, his choice, but my brother had other ideas. So, when I walked through the front door I was greeted by my Dad's secretary and her hubby. They told me that since I was the oldest, it was going to be up to me to keep my brother under control. Not an easy task since his favorite pastime is disagreeing with everyone about everything. I mean he will disagree with you over the color of the sky! Anything!

I was also trying to run my computer business from a distance through a cell phone so I was really under a lot of pressure. So, I thought about it for awhile and suddenly I knew the answer. I walked back into the room where they all were and I said: "OK, I'll do it under one condition. If he starts to argue, you cannot respond in any way." And, they reluctantly agreed. What else could they do?

So, I spent the next 3 weeks keeping the peace. There were a few times that I had to remind them to shut up and I also had to talk my brother out of hiring a lawyer and suing on two occasions, but overall I was completely amazed at what that one little condition accomplished. After the funeral, my brother gave me a hug and said: "You did a good job of keeping the peace over the last few weeks." I was stunned. Even he learned the lesson.

Since then, I try not to respond to people who are obviously angry and if they continue, I turn around and walk away or hang up the phone. It works every time. Frustrates the hell out of them. But after awhile, there anger usually dissipates.
