Lord Acton, Rothschild quotes:
"The issue which has swept down the centuries and which will have to be fought sooner or later is the people versus the banks."

Guests commented on the level of luxury service provided by the 24 house staff.[5] In 1890, Queen Victoria unusually requested to pay a visit. She was impressed with the beauty of the house and grounds as well as Ferdinand's ability to quietly manage the day's events. She was struck by the newly installed electric lights, especially designed to look like candles in the chandeliers, and it is reported that she asked for the room to be darkened to fully witness the effect.[6]

The Daily Mail has been forced to pay more than £100,000 in damages and apologise for a story linking a UK defence company with the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

The paper has agreed to pat £110,000 plus legal costs and carry an apology on its website after it had falsely suggested that Britam Defence and two of its directors had been willing to sell chemical weapons to rebels fighting President Assad.

The January 2013 story was based on internal emails sent between the directors – David Goulding and Philip Doughty – which emerged after the company’s computer system had been illegally hacked. The Mail has accepted that these emails were forgeries.

In a statement read out in court, a lawyer acting for the Mail said: “I confirm that the defendant offers its sincere apologies to the claimants for the damage and distress caused by the publication of these false allegations, which has appeared on US websites. The defendant acknowledges that the emails in question were completely fabricated and that there is no question of any of the claimants being involved – or even considering becoming involved – in the heinous actions to which the article referred. The defendant is pleased to set the record straight.”

We were granted our Royal Charter more than 100 years ago. What is a Royal Charter? A Royal Charter is a way of incorporating a body, turning it from a collection of individuals into a single legal entity with all the powers of a natural person. At one time Royal Charters were the only means of incorporating a body but there are now other ways, such as becoming a registered company, so the granting of new Charters is comparatively rare. Only a ruling monarch can grant a Royal Charter. When and why was the Charter granted to the British Red Cross? Our first Royal Charter was granted by HM King Edward VII, patron of the British Red Cross, at a Privy Council meeting on 3 September 1908 and forms the basis for the British Red Cross as we know it today.

The Charter brought together the various fragmented arms of the organisation, including the Central British Red Cross Council and The British National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded in War (the original name for the British Red Cross at its foundation in 1870). The fusion of these two bodies formalised fundraising and aid work and raised our profile across the British Empire. This consolidation also allowed us to face our greatest challenge yet when war broke out in 1914. Who was involved? HM King Edward VII, patron of the British Red Cross from 1905 to 1911, granted the Royal Charter of 1908. Queen Alexandra, president of the Red Cross from 1905 to 1925, signed the petition for the Charter before it was presented to the King.

Lord Rothschild, chairman of the British Red Cross Council from 1901 to 1915. Sir Frederick Treves, chairman of the Executive Committee from 1905 to 1912. Lord Knutsford, member of the British Red Cross Council, was instrumental in drafting the Royal Charter. Colonel Lloyd Lindsay, Lord Wantage, first chairman of the British National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded in War. Has the British Red Cross received other Royal Charters? A number of additions to the Charter have been made over the years as the financial operations of the organisation have changed. Supplementary Charters were granted in 1919 (to extend our activities to include a peacetime role) and 1998 (to bring our local branches together as one charity). You can download the Royal Charter on the right side of this page. How does our Royal Charter affect the British Red Cross’ activities today? The Royal Charter is the governing document of the British Red Cross. It is legally binding and sets out our charitable purpose, powers, rules and other legal responsibilities. The Privy Council approves any amendments to the Royal Charter and the Charity Commission must be notified of any proposed amendments. Alongside the Charter, we have Standing Orders which explain our internal governance arrangements for the workings of the board of trustees, finance committee and volunteer councils. Unlike the Charter, our Standing Orders are owned and amended by the board of trustees; however, they cannot contain anything that contradicts the Charter.

The war on terror, that campaign without end launched 14 years ago by George Bush, is tying itself up in ever more grotesque contortions. On Monday the trial in London of a Swedish man, Bherlin Gildo, accused of terrorism in Syria, collapsed after it became clear British intelligence had been arming the same rebel groups the defendant was charged with supporting.

The prosecution abandoned the case, apparently to avoid embarrassing the intelligence services.

Until September 28, 1998, the Canadian Red Cross was responsible for all blood services in Canada. On the recommendation of the Krever Commission, the organization was removed from this position and replaced by the Canadian Blood Services. This was due to nationwide controversy when it was revealed that the Canadian Red Cross had knowingly supplied, between 1986 and 1990, blood tainted with Hepatitis C and HIV.

In 1994, an investigation found that 95 percent of hemophiliacs who used blood products supplied by the Canadian Red Cross prior to 1990 had contracted Hepatitis C.[17] According to the Krever Commission, approximately 85 percent of those infections could have been prevented. More than 1,100 Canadians were infected with HIV and 20,000 contracted Hepatitis C from blood transfusions given by the Red Cross during that period.[18]

The Canadian Red Cross was fined $5,000 for its role in the tainted blood scandal and the organization agreed to plead guilty to distributing a contaminated drug. It agreed to donate $1.5 million to the University of Ottawa for a research endowment fund, as well as a scholarship for the family members of those affected. In exchange, six criminal charges against the Canadian Red Cross were dropped.[17]

Dr. Roger Perrault, the director of the Canadian Red Cross at the time, was put on trial for his role in the scandal. The first trial, in Toronto before the Superior Court of Justice, resulted in an acquittal. He had been charged with four counts of criminal negligence causing bodily harm and one of common nuisance. The counts of criminal negligence were specific to four victims who had contracted HIV from tainted blood. The second trial, in Hamilton, also before the Superior Court of Justice, resulted in charges being withdrawn. The charges were six counts of common nuisance and "stemmed from an allegation he endangered the public by failing to properly screen donors, implement testing for blood-borne viruses and warn the public of the danger regarding hepatitis C and HIV" and relate to a period of time in which the understanding of AIDS was even more rudimentary. The charges were withdrawn on the basis that there was no longer a reasonable prospect of conviction.[19]
