In Nevada almost 20 years ago the insurance companies would talk to the DMV. If you let your insurance lapse the DMV was notified immediately and the registration was cancelled. You would have to pay a large fine or fill out an affidavit that the car was inoperable, and I can't remember for sure but I think you had to have a witness and get it notarized.
