This is plausible. Even if they don't expect the charges to stick it'll give the media a never-ending stream of new anti-Trump material. Every day for years it'll be "Today in the Trump trial blah blah blah ominous speculative bullshit blah" and if Trump so much as mentions it, they'll call it grounds for impeachment due to obstruction of justice.
