The term, "stringer,' also refers to a reporter who is sent out to get the basic facts of a situation/meeting/event and to call in the story to the main press office. Stringers do not get a byline, usually are not on the payroll, (and thus are paid by the job), and they do not actually have to do the write-up. Usually a copy editor will write the story in conjunction with what is reported by the stringer. Just sayin.'
