Alibaba’s Jack Ma ordered to appear before Indian court after ex-employee sues over alleged censorship & fake news
Jack Ma, CEO of Alibaba, has been pulled into a lawsuit filed by a former Indian employee who claims the company’s mobile apps censor content. The case comes after India imposed a sweeping ban on Chinese apps.
A district court in Gurugram has summoned Ma in the case, which concerns two Alibaba mobile applications, UC News and UC Browser. According to court filings seen by Reuters, an ex-employee of Alibaba’s UC Web, which developed the apps, claims that the firm censors content seen as embarrassing to China, and that its mobile services are used to spread fake news designed “to cause social and political turmoil.”
The suit alleges that the former employee was sacked after raising objections about the company’s practices. The plaintiff, who reportedly worked as an associate director at the UC Web office in Gurugram until October 2017, is seeking $268,000 in damages.
Examples of alleged false stories spread by the UC apps included a 2017 report that the 2,000-rupee had been banned, as well as a sensational headline from 2018 declaring that war had broken out between India and Pakistan. Neither of the stories was true, although the authenticity of the purported UC content could not be independently verified. The lawsuit also details a “sensitive words list” which allegedly censored keywords in Hindi and English such as “India-China border” and “Sino-India war.”

“We are asking you to act on this statement and prohibit Carlin Romano from teaching at Penn this fall or ever again.”

Penn Professor Faces Calls For His Removal After Questioning An Anti-Racism Statement [UPDATED]
We have been discussing efforts to fire professors who voice dissenting views of the basis or demands of recent protests including an effort to oust a leading economist from the University of Chicago as well as a leading linguistics professor at Harvard. It is part of a wave of intolerance sweeping over our colleges and our newsrooms. Now, an effort has been launched to fire University of Pennsylvania Professor Carlin Romano and to kick him off a prestigious literary group because Romano questioned the language of a proposed statement on racism in the publishing industry and even spotted an embarrassing typo…
Professor Romano is an attorney who teaches at Penn’s Annenberg School for Communication. He became the latest target in academia when he questioned the language of a proposed anti-racism statement. Romano has publicly declared support for the movement and has written in the past of the need to diversify the publishing industry. However, he wrote to object to statements that he felt failed to acknowledge the past efforts by people like him and to paint the entire industry as racist. There was a time when such criticism would have been welcomed on boards and faculties. This is not “those times.”…

ICE deports former Irish Republican Army terrorist caught in Massachusetts
A onetime member of the Irish Republican Army paroled after serving time for bombing a police station in Northern Ireland decades ago was deported by Boston ICE officials this week.
Darcey McMenamin, who was 18 when he was charged in the 1993 mortar attack on a police station west of Belfast, lost in his appeal to both remain in the Boston area and be set free during the coronairus pandemic.
He was deported back to Ireland this week, the New England office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Thursday.
“There is no safe haven in the U.S. for foreign nationals convicted of terrorist activities. ERO Boston officers still continue their duties even during these trying times,” said Todd M. Lyons, field office director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston.
“Those who believe they can hide in the U.S. from their crimes including terrorist activities they committed in other countries are in for a rude awakening,” Lyons said. “ICE remains committed to removing dangerous foreign nationals from the U.S., even those who may have managed to evade immigration law for a lengthy period of time.”

Explosions Rock Military Compound in Southern Baghdad, Reports Say
The situation in Iraq has been worsening in recent months, with more attacks taking place every week. One of the last ones occurred on 19 July, when two rockets fell near the US Embassy in Baghdad's Green Zone, where diplomatic missions are located.
Explosions have hit a military compound in southern Baghdad, Iraq, a statement from the armed forces said. According to Reuters, citing security sources, the military base, where multiple explosions took place, is used as an ammunition depot by the Iraqi police and military.
The cause of the explosion is unclear, according to the military. No immediate information regarding any potential casualties has been reported.
The explosions took place days after four Katyusha rockets hit a military base used by US-led coalition troops south of Baghdad and caused some material damage, according to the Iraqi military.

Antitrust hearing with CEOs of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google will likely be delayed
A hotly anticipated House antitrust hearing with the CEOs of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google set for Monday will likely be delayed according to reports from CNBC, The Verge, and Axios.
The hearing is expected to be postponed due to memorial services for the late Rep. John Lewis next week. The civil rights champion will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol and a ceremony is scheduled for Monday afternoon.
Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sundar Pichai were set to testify Monday before the House antitrust subcommittee on market dominance in the tech sector, the culmination of an inquiry into the companies they run that has lasted for more than a year. It is not clear when the new hearing date will be scheduled but Axios reports the committee is looking at the week of August 3.
The executives are expected to attend the hearing via video call due to the ongoing public health risk. It will be the first time all four CEOs have appeared together to address concerns about anti-competitive behavior in the tech industry. It will also be the first time Bezos testifies before Congress. The four tech giants are under antitrust scrutiny from several government entities in the U.S. and abroad.

‘Ghost Boats’ full of dead North Korean fishermen may be China’s fault
So many North Koreans have disappeared from fishing villages along the Hermit Kingdom's east coast that the villages dotting the coastline are becoming known as "widow's villages."
Where do their husbands go?
They end up dead on boats adrift in the Sea of Japan. Their ships and bodies wash ashore on Japan or are picked up by the Japanese Coast Guard. Last year alone, 50 or more North Koreans were found on Japanese beaches.
For years, the phenomenon of these fishing boats full of dead men was a mystery. But now a few anonymous complaints to the United Nations may explain the "Ghost Boats" phenomenon. China has been poaching fish in North Korean waters, according to an investigation by the Irish Times.
In March 2020, two countries reported that 800 Chinese fishing vessels violated the sanctions placed on North Korean fishing waters. The sanctions were intended to prevent the North from selling the rights to fish in those waters. The area is a heavily-contested and poorly watched region of the ocean as it is but Chinese fleets compound the issue by switching off their location transponders.

China “Buys” Half of Africa, Expands Territory to Conquer World
The new Chinese Silk Road has facilitated China’s political domination of African countries and consolidated its influence over multilateral organizations
The year 2020 has undoubtedly been the worst year for humanity so far this century. Thousands of people are dying from a pandemic; economies are devastated; there is hunger, suffering, and uncertainty. Anguish has reigned in practically all the countries of the world, in all but one which has done quite well: China.
To be clear, based on verifiable facts, it is too soon to determine if the coronavirus plaguing the world today was a creation of China or if it was an accident that got out of control. What we do know is that the Communist Party knew about this threat before it spread across the planet and did absolutely nothing to stop it, quite the contrary: they pressured the WHO not to declare a pandemic at the beginning of the year and allowed their citizens to leave the country and visit the rest of the world, while closing down their own cities. In any case, China’s guilt is undeniable, and consequently, millions of people are starving today, thousands are mourning the loss of their families, and the economies around the globe are suffering from disasters. Meanwhile, China is taking advantage of the situation.
While the world is in a deep economic recession, China has been the only country to present positive numbers in the second quarter of the year. Its GDP grew 3.2% year-on-year in this period, contradicting the forecasts of economic specialists who expected a negative performance, as is the case almost everywhere else in the world. So in nominal terms, China’s total wealth in the first half of the year was 6.53 trillion dollars.

Iran’s military network comes out of the shadows in Venezuela
To provide political cover for these activities and evade U.S. sanctions, Iran and Venezuela have labeled its cooperation as humanitarian assistance
Walking through the aisles of a newly constructed Caracas grocery store, Venezuelans can expect to see authentic Iranian food brands, such as Delnoosh and Varamin. The supermarket, Iran’s latest foray into the country, is connected to Tehran’s feared clerical army, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and comes at a time when tensions are intensifying in Iran and the Middle East.
As reported in the Center for a Secure Free Society’s monthly VRIC Monitor —named for the emerging security and intelligence alliance between Venezuela, Russia, Iran, and China— the Islamic Republic continues to come out of the shadows in Venezuela, as the two rogue regimes begin to openly conduct support operations despite U.S and international sanctions.
To provide political cover for these activities and evade U.S. sanctions, Iran and Venezuela have labeled its cooperation as humanitarian assistance. However, these activities are coordinated by Iranian state-owned entities linked to the military, implying a more sinister motive to the alliance’s open cooperation.
In May, five Iranian-flagged tankers arrived in Venezuela, delivering approximately 1.5 millions barrels of fuel with promises for more. The successful shipment was celebrated, with a mass propaganda campaign on behalf of the Venezuela and Iranian regimes, as a chink in the armor of U.S. sanctions.
