Senators Probe Netflix Partnership With Chinese Genocide Denier

GOP senators press streaming giant on relationship with author who defended CCP's Uighur repression

Republican senators are demanding Netflix explain its decision to adapt a Chinese science fiction trilogy written by a Xinjiang genocide denier into an original series.

The senators, including Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.) and Rick Scott (Fla.), are marshaling support against the streaming giant's plan to adapt Chinese author Liu Cixin's bestselling Three-Body Problem trilogy into a live-action series. Cixin defended his government's brutal suppression of Muslim Uighurs in a 2019 interview with the New Yorker.

"The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is committing atrocities in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region (XUAR)," the legislators wrote. "Sadly, a number of U.S. companies continue to either actively or tacitly allow the normalization of, or apologism for, these crimes. The decision to produce an adaptation of Mr. Liu’s work can be viewed as such normalization."

Bela Bajaria, a Joe Biden campaign megadonor who gave as much as $500,000 to a group affiliated with the candidate, was in charge of "international content" when Netflix ordered the series. She now oversees all of Netflix's original series across the world, according to the Wall Street Journal. Netflix, which did not return a request for comment, previously told the Washington Free Beacon that she "works on the series side of the business."

Netflix's collaboration with Liu reflects Hollywood's willingness to cater to the massive Chinese market, even if it means turning a blind eye to the country's human rights abuses. Disney's recent live-action remake of Mulan even thanked Xinjiang authorities—some of them directly implicated in the Uighur crackdown—in its closing credit. Hollywood studios also routinely avoid topics that might anger Chinese censors, going so far as to change movie villains’ nationalities from Chinese to North Korean.

Liu, the author of the trilogy, offered a vigorous defense of the Chinese government in a wide-ranging 2019 interview with the New Yorker, offering justifications for everything from the CCP's one-child policy to its authoritarian governance. When asked about the Chinese government's detention of more than one million Muslim Uighurs, Liu argued that the Uighurs posed a terrorist threat and claimed that the government is "trying to lift them out of poverty."

Netflix announced plans to adapt The Three-Body Problem on Sept. 1, enlisting Game of Thrones writer-producer duo David Benioff and D.B. Weiss for the project. The company also brought on Liu as a "consulting producer" to produce the English-language adaptation, according to a press release.

Southeast Texas businessman sentenced to life in prison for sex trafficking young girl following ICE investigation

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A Southeast Texas aquaculture company owner was sentenced to life in federal prison Tuesday following his conviction of sex trafficking of a minor female. This case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in Corpus Christi, Texas, with assistance from the Brownsville (Texas) Police Department and the Texas Rangers.

David Keith Wills, 68, a previous resident of Rockport and South Padre Island, was sentenced to life in federal prison and was ordered to pay $172,000 in restitution to the victim along with $85,000 in fines for multiple counts of sex trafficking, enticement of a child and conspiring to obstruct justice. A federal jury convicted Wills, the founder and part owner of Global Blue Technologies, Oct. 8, 2019.

"For three years, this individual preyed on the innocence of our most vulnerable population relying on economic and psychological manipulation to control and silence his victim," said Mark Dawson, special agent in charge, HSI Houston. "With today's sentencing we have removed this predator from the community and sent a resounding message that we are committed to working with our law enforcement partners to aggressively investigate and prosecute anyone who seeks to exploit our nation's children."

According to court documents, the jury found at trial that from 2012 to 2015 Wills conspired with his mistress Maria Candelaria Losoya to traffic the minor female for sex beginning when she was just 10 years old. Losoya and Wills used their cell phones to arrange meetings at several different locations where Wills would sexually assault the minor female multiple times until she reported it in April 2015.

During this time Wills promised to pay the victim's college tuition if he was allowed to sexually assault the young girl. He also reimbursed Losoya for gifts to the victim and expenditures she would otherwise not have been able to afford. These included an iPad, Bose headphones, flatscreen TV, Apple laptop, trampoline, swimming pool and a school trip to Washington D.C.

After the victim reported the abuse, Wills conspired with a friend to remove a laptop from his home, wanting to destroy it to prevent law enforcement from seizing and reviewing it.

Several witnesses testified at the trial including the minor victim, forensic interviewer, the nurse who first examined her, several state and federal law enforcement officers and an expert witness. An eyewitness also described seeing the victim at a Portland hotel where Wills and Losoya met in March 2014.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Zahra Jivani Fenelon, Richard Bennett and Stephanie Bauman prosecuted the case.

Gantz 'concerned' about maintaining Israel’s advantage in region

Engel: It is inevitable that the Saudis will come to the table

Defense Minister Benny Gantz is concerned about Israel maintaining its qualitative military edge (QME) in the Middle East after the US sells arms to the United Arab Emirates, he said Thursday at The Jerusalem Post Annual Conference.

Gantz was interviewed by Jerusalem Post editor-in-chief Yaakov Katz earlier this week before leaving for the US for a meeting with Defense Secretary Mark Esper. “We must make sure our QME stays way ahead of other countries,” he said then.

On Thursday, Gantz praised the agreements Israel reached with the UAE and Bahrain, calling their impact on Iran “a paradigm shift.”

“It signals to Iran that it is facing a whole block of moderate countries, and that is a great advantage,” he said.

Asked whether he was concerned about the future of bipartisan relations between Israel and the US, Gantz said for him, bipartisan support was like a religion.

“The bipartisan relationship is bigger than us and more important than us,” he said. “It is stronger than any government in Israel or the US.”

Also at the conference, Rep. Eliot Engel, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said he was concerned over news that the US plans to sell F-35s to the UAE. He said he hopes more Arab countries will normalize relations with Israel.

Addressing the possibility that Saudi Arabia might normalize ties with Israel, Engel said: “I think it is inevitable that the Saudis will come to the table.”

Regarding the possible sale of F-35s to the UAE, he said: “I’m concerned about it because once you lose that qualitative military edge, it’s a slippery slope. You need to work with these countries; they are our allies, and they are potential allies to Israel. But we just cannot do anything that could potentially cause Israel to lose the qualitative military edge.”

Engel, who lost his primary bid to progressive candidate Jamaal Bowman in June, reflected on US-Israel ties after serving three decades in Congress.

“I take pride in the fact that the US and Israel are the closest friends,” he said. “It doesn’t really matter to me who’s elected and who’s not elected. I want the US-Israel relationship to be stronger and stronger, and I think I’ve been a strong part of it.”

New York to Doctors: Hand Over Private Patient Information

Big Brother wants more about you from your doctor—and fast.

Last month, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered health care professionals across the state to provide the “full residential address and phone number, occupation and employer name, full work address and employer phone number as well as race and ethnicity” of all patients tested for Covid-19.

On Monday, he upped the ante. The new order, obtained by Judicial Watch, mandates that doctors “collect and report whether a patient attends or works in a school and if so, the name and location of the school. This includes elementary, secondary, and post-secondary/higher education. It is also critical to list the patient’s local address if different from their permanent address.”

Health care providers must report “within three hours.” Three hours! The price of non-compliance? “Civil penalties of up to $2,000 per day.”

No mention in the advisory of privacy safeguards or limits on what can be done with the information. Medical professionals in New York understand the need for Covid-19 testing, but concerns are mounting that Cuomo is using a March state of emergency declaration to trample patient rights.

Ex-Union President Sentenced for Violent Extortion in Church Brawl Case

Iron Workers have spent more than $1 million to boost Biden, Dems

A former union president was sentenced to more than three years in prison for violent extortion on Wednesday after he coordinated a brutal assault on a group of non-union workers at an Indiana church.

Jeffrey Veach resigned as president of Iron Workers Local 395 after pleading guilty to the charges in January—two days after the labor group endorsed Joe Biden. The 57-year-old Veach coordinated an attack in January 2016 against D5 Iron Works, a non-union company in Illinois, over a construction contract that encroached on the union's perceived "territory." The attack left one of the non-union workers with a broken jaw that later required multiple surgeries.

"At Veach's direction, the union members conducted a coordinated attack on the D5 workers," the Justice Department said in a release. "The victims were beaten with fists and loose pieces of hardwood."

Iron Workers Local 395 did not respond to a request for comment about Veach's sentence.

Union attorneys argued that the incident should have been exempt from prosecution because the assault took place as part of "legitimate union objectives," echoing the 1973 Supreme Court Enmons ruling, which found federal anti-extortion laws do not apply to union violence if it is conducted to advance union interests. Labor watchdogs welcomed the sentence, saying that the federal government needs to ramp up enforcement to curb violence. Matthew Leen, vice president of the National Right to Work Committee, called on Congress to eliminate that exemption in the future.

"Unfortunately, there is a long history of union bosses considering intimidation and violence to be legitimate tools to be used against workers and employers who refuse to toe the union line," Leen told the Washington Free Beacon. "This case demonstrates why it is past time to enact the Freedom of Union Violence Act, which eliminates unions' exemptions from the Hobbs Anti-Extortion Act."

The Iron Workers union endorsed Joe Biden for president in January, two days before Veach's guilty plea, calling Biden "one of us" in a statement. It has since spent more than $1 million to bolster the Biden campaign and other Democratic candidates, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Veach will be barred from serving in union leadership again for another 13 years at the end of his prison term.

Sen. Rand Paul will refer Hunter Biden for DOJ criminal investigation

Fox News reported Wednesday that Sen. Rand Paul plans to refer Democratic candidate Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, to the Department of Justice for a “criminal referral.” The call for a referral came on the heels of a Senate report, which revealed that more than $3.5 million had been transferred into his bank account from the wife of a former Moscow Mayor, among other suspicious financial transactions.

The explosive report released by Senator’s Ron Johnson, Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, and Chuck Grassley, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, revealed that the U.S. Treasury Department had been monitoring suspicious transactions into Hunter Biden’s bank account from Russia, Ukraine and China.

The lengthy report showed that Hunter Biden took $3.5 million in a wire transfer from Elena Baturina. Baturina is the richest woman in Russia and the widow of Yury Luzhkov, the former mayor of Moscow, with links to Vladimir Putin. The wire transfer took place in 2014, during the time Vice President Biden was serving in the Obama administration. “Baturina became Russia’s only female billionaire when her plastics company, Inteko, received a series of Moscow municipal contracts while her husband was mayor,” the report noted.

Paul told Fox News that the transaction is highly suspicious and should be investigated by the Department of Justice.

“I think riding on Air Force Two and doing business is illegal. I think that is against the law, and probably a felony. I think it’s illegal to take money from a Russian politician’s wife, $3.5 million,” Paul told Fox News. “Was it reported accurately? I think the only way to determine the actual legality of this is to have it referred to the Department of Justice. So, I’m going to send the report over. I don’t know if the whole committee will vote for it, but I’m sending the report, tomorrow, to the Department of Justice, and we’re asking for a criminal referral.”

Another key finding in the report alleges that “Hunter Biden had business associations with Ye Jianming, Gongwen Dong, and other Chinese nationals linked to the Communist government and the People’s Liberation Army. Those associations resulted in millions of dollars in cash flow.”

As alarming, another finding in the report shows that “Hunter Biden paid nonresident women who were nationals of Russia or other Eastern European countries and who appear to be linked to an ‘Eastern European prostitution or human trafficking ring.’”

Hunter Biden’s work with Burisma Holdings was highly criticized behind closed doors when his father was Vice President. Former Vice President Joe Biden had been put in charge of overseeing foreign issues with Ukraine when his son became a paid board member for Burisma, in which he received a salary of roughly $50,000 per month.

Are You Feeling Safer? ‘War of the Worlds’ Pits U.S. and Israel Against Everyone Else

The media being focused on an upcoming election, coronavirus, fires on the West Coast and burgeoning BLM and Antifa unrest, it is perhaps no surprise that some stories are not exactly making it through to the evening news. Last week an important vote in the United Nations General Assembly went heavily against the United States. It was regarding a non-binding resolution that sought to suspend all economic sanctions worldwide while the coronavirus cases continue to increase. It called for “intensified international cooperation and solidarity to contain, mitigate and overcome the pandemic and its consequences.” It was a humanitarian gesture to help overwhelmed governments and health care systems cope with the pandemic by having a free hand to import food and medicines.

The final tally was 169 to 2, with only Israel and the United States voting against. Both governments apparently viewed the U.N. resolution as problematical because they fully support the unilateral economic warfare that they have been waging to bring about regime change in countries like Iran, Syria and Venezuela. Sanctions imposed on those countries are designed to punish the people more than the governments in the expectation that there will be an uprising to bring about regime change. This, of course, has never actually happened as a consequence of sanctions and all that is really delivered is suffering. When they cast their ballots, some delegates at the U.N. might even have been recalling former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s claim that the death of 500,000 Iraqi children due to U.S. imposed sanctions had been “worth it.”

Clearly, a huge majority of the world’s governments, to include the closest U.S. allies, no longer buy the American big lie when it claims to be the leader of the free world, a promoter of liberal democracy and a force for good. The vote prompted one observer, John Whitbeck, a former international lawyer based in Paris, to comment how “On almost every significant issue facing mankind and the planet, it is Israel and the United States against mankind and the planet.”

The United Nations was not the only venue where the U.S. was able to demonstrate what kind of nation it has become. Estimates of how many civilians have been killed directly or indirectly as a consequence of the so-called Global War on Terror initiated by George W. Bush are in the millions, with roughly 4 million being frequently cited. Nearly all of the dead have been Muslims. Now there is a new estimate of the number of civilians that have fled their homes as a result of the worldwide conflict initiated by Washington and its dwindling number of allies since 2001. The estimate comes from Brown University’s “Costs of War Project,” which has issued a report Creating Refugees: Displacement Caused by the United States Post-9/11 Wars that seeks to quantify those who have “fled their homes in the eight most violent wars the U.S. military has launched or participated in since 2001.”

The project tracks the number of refugees, asylum seekers applying for refugee status, and internally displaced people or persons (IDPs) in the countries that America and its allies have most targeted since 9/11: Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, the Philippines, Libya and Syria. All are predominantly Muslim countries with the sole exception of the Philippines, which has a large Muslim minority.

Massachusetts man sentenced to 5 years in federal prison for distributing child pornography following ICE investigation

BOSTON – Leonidas N. Mavrogenis, Jr., 62, of Salem, Massachusetts, was sentenced to five years in prison for distribution of child pornography, it was announced by Michael Shea, acting special agent in charge, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Boston and Scott W. Murray U.S. attorney for New Hampshire in a New Hampshire federal court Sept. 22.

According to court documents and statements made in court, during an ongoing undercover investigation, a member of the New Hampshire Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, with whom HSI Boston partners, accessed a peer-to-peer network to identify users who may be sharing images of child pornography. Between February 8, 2018, and March 23, 2018, law enforcement conducted downloads of child pornography from an IP address later found to belong to Mavrogenis.

On August 1, 2018, law enforcement executed a search warrant at the defendant’s residence in Salem, New Hampshire. During the search, law enforcement seized computer equipment and electronic devices for forensic examination. Subsequent forensic examination revealed thousands of still images and hundreds of video files containing child pornography, including videos and images downloaded by law enforcement during their investigation.

“This sentence serves as a warning to any who diminish the seriousness of the sharing of such disturbing images.” said Michael Shea, acting special agent in charge, HSI Boston. “Together with our partners in the New Hampshire Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, HSI Boston congratulates the U.S. Attorney’s office for their success in ensuring justice was done in this case. We hope today’s sentence brings some measure of restoration to the lives of those who are victimized by the actions of Mavrogenis and any others who spread this garbage online.”

“Those who distribute child pornography are sharing horrific images of young people who have been abused,” said U.S. Attorney Murray. “In order to stop this savage exploitation of children, we will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to see that those responsible are held accountable in court. This serious crime will result in serious federal prison time.”

This matter was investigated by ICE's HSI and the New Hampshire ICAC Task Force. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Cam Le, of the U.S. Attorney for New Hampshire.

ICE HSI is committed to combating the sexual exploitation of children. Investigations of child sexual exploitation are among HSI’s primary investigative priorities. The sexual abuse of children impacts the most vulnerable segment of our society.

ICE HSI knows the importance of education and community awareness regarding the dangers of online activity.

Providing children, teens, parents and teachers with information regarding the potential dangers of online environments and how to stay safe online can help prevent many instances of child exploitation. That is why HSI has partnered with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s (NCMEC) NetSmartz and the ICAC Task Forces to develop Project iGuardian.

Why Julian Assange, a Non-US Citizen, Operating Outside the US, Is Being Prosecuted Under the US Espionage Act

If the original 1917 Espionage Act were still in force, the U.S. government could not have charged WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange under it. The 1917 language of the Act restricted the territory where it could be applied to the United States, its possessions and international waters:

“The provisions of this title shall extend to all Territories, possessions, and places subject to the jurisdiction of the United States whether or not continguous thereto, and offenses under this title when committed upon the high seas or elsewhere within the admiralty and maritime jurisdiction of the United States …”

WikiLeaks publishing operations have never occurred in any of these places. But in 1961 Congressman Richard Poff, after several tries, was able to get the Senate t0 repeal Section 791 that restricted the Act to “within the jurisdiction of the United States, on the high seas, and within the United States.”

Poff was motivated by the case of Irvin Chambers Scarbeck, a State Department official who was convicted of passing classified information to the Polish government during the Cold War under a different statute, the controversial 1950 Subversive Activities Control Act, or McCarran Act.

(Congress overrode a veto by President Harry Truman of the McCarran Act. He called the Act “the greatest danger to freedom of speech, press, and assembly since the Alien and Sedition Laws of 1798,” a “mockery of the Bill of Rights” and a “long step toward totalitarianism.” Most of its provisions have been repealed.)

Saudi-Backed Forces Shot Down Two Houthi Drones In Ma’rib Within 48 Hours

Saudi-backed forces have shot down two drones launched by the Houthis, Ansar Allah, in the central Yemeni province of Ma’rib.

On September 22, Saudi-backed tribal fighters shot down the first drone in the southern part of the district of Sirwah. The drone was a Qasef-2k, a copy of the Iranian Ababil-2. The kamikaze drone is armed with a heavy high-explosive fragmentation, HE-FRAG, warhead that explodes 20m over the target.

On September 23, the Yemeni National Army, the main local ally of the Saudi-led coalition, shot down a second drone of the Houthis in the area of al-Alam.

The drone’s type was not identified. Photos of the wreckage revealed that the drone has a “delta wing” design. Similar drones were used in the 2019 Abqaiq–Khurais attack that targeted oil processing facilities in eastern Saudi Arabia.

The two drones were likely on their way to hit military targets in Ma’rib. The Houthis attack Saudi-backed forces in the province on a regular basis.

In the last three years, the Houthis developed their offensive capabilities and launched several successful drone and missile attacks. High-value targets in Yemen and deep inside Saudi Arabia were struck by the Yemeni group.

ASSANGE HEARING DAY THIRTEEN–Prosecution Witness Leaves Out Reason Why Assange Was Sent to Belmarsh Medical Ward

7 am EDT: Court is in session.

9:15 am EDT: The second prosecution witness has taken the stand and under withering cross examination by defense attorney Edward Fitzgerald key parts of his story have fallen apart.

Dr. Nigel Blackwood, a forensic psychiatrist for the National Health Service, testified on direct examination by James Lewis QC that he determined Julian Assange was suffering from “moderate” depression, not severe depression as defense witness Dr. Michael Kopelman testified on Tuesday.

Blackwood said Assange was not at high risk of suicide, as Kopelman had testified.

“I think there is some risk of suicide but that risk has been carefully managed in Belmarsh and the risk factors are modifiable,” Blackwood said from the stand inside Old Bailey. “He engages with treatments to manage that risk.”

“I believe he retains the capacity to resist suicide,” Blackwood testified. Lewis then went through the same prison notes he went through on Wednesday or examinations of Assange, which repeatedly showed him displaying “good eye contact, humor, alertness, a no mention of self-harm.”

On cross examination Wednesday, Fitzgerald established that a report of “no mention of self-harm” meant that Assange was not asked about it and he didn’t volunteer any sentiments about suicide to prison doctors whom he did not trust.

But Lewis went through the notes again eliciting confirmation from Blackwood based on his own four-hour examination of Assange during two meetings in March. Blackwood said:

“He could concentrate during four hours of interview, and his gestures and posture were appropriate,” Blackwood testified. “He becomes animated about the political nature of his trial and his expected treatment in the U.S., and gets animated and speaks in detail in a monologue, but can be interrupted. He considers me naive about my understanding of his case. He said Kppelman did not have a political dimension to his report, so he was very keen to give me the political dimension and to exercise editorial control over my report.”

Blackwood testified that he did not find Assange to be suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, as Kopelman had testified, and that any traits of autism were on the low end of the spectrum.

He said Assange exhibited pride in saying he was able to rally other prisoners to his cause. Blackwood added that in February Assange was “found to be drinking coffee and talking with other prisoners, he was articulate and well and fit to stand trial. He was deemed not suicidal.”

Blackwood said when Assange wasn’t in the hospital wing of the prison, was reading books and interacted with other prisoners. How he came to be put in health care isolation was a key moment in the morning’s drama.

Blackwood asserted that he was sent to the medical ward because of a video of Assange in the prison that became public in June 2019. He testified that if Assange had indeed suffered from severe depression, the prison authorities would have sent him for outside medical treatment.

That they didn’t showed Assange was not suffering as much as Kopelman had contended, Blackwood said. “They have no interest in this process,” he said.

GOOD vs. EVIL: Death of Ginsburg Drives Committed Leftist to Join Church of Satan

It should be clear by now — We are in a battle of good versus evil.

An angry leftist admitted this week that Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death drove her to the Church of Satan.

Jamie Smith, a 40-something attorney, admitted this week that RBG’s death drove her to the Church of Satan.

What?

So now they’re normalizing Satan!

Via the Huffington Post.

I am a 40-something attorney and mother who lives in a quiet neighborhood with a yard and a garage full of scooters and soccer balls. I often walk with my children to get ice cream and spend weekends hiking through a national park. I am not the type of person who would normally consider becoming a Satanist, but these are not normal times.

Like so many other women in the United States, when I learned of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s passing, my first reaction was not grief but fear. I fear that American citizens are inching closer to living in a theocracy or dictatorship and that the checks meant to prevent this from happening are close to eroding beyond repair.

When Justice Ginsburg died, I knew immediately that action was needed on a scale we have not seen before. Our democracy has become so fragile that the loss of one of the last guardians of common sense and decency in government less than two months before a pivotal election has put our civil and reproductive rights in danger like never before. And, so, I have turned to Satanism.

Members of the Satanic Temple do not believe in the supernatural or superstition. In the same way that some Unitarians and some Jews do not believe in God, Satanic Temple members do not worship Satan and most are atheists. They are not affiliated in any way with the Church of Satan. Instead, the Satanic Temple uses the devil as a symbol of rebellion.

Just like other faiths, the Satanic Temple has a code that their members believe in deeply and use to guide their lives.

The left is now openly promoting satanism.

Lord help us!

Trump Team Suspected Cognitive Decline In Special Counsel Robert Mueller

Byron York of the Washington Examiner has written a fascinating piece about Robert Mueller, the former special counsel who oversaw the investigation into allegations that members of the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.

President Trump was investigated for 675 days by Mueller and a team of 19 lawyers. Despite 2,800 subpoenas and 500 witness interviews, the counsel’s office found no evidence “that any U.S. person or Trump campaign official or associate” conspired or “knowingly coordinated” with Russians during the 2016 campaign.

In his piece, York says members of Team Trump suspected cognitive decline in Mueller, who is now 76 years old — a year younger than former vice president Joe Biden.

The political world was stunned on July 24, 2019, when Trump-Russia special counsel Robert Mueller testified before the House and Senate. It was not anything Mueller said that shocked observers — it was his demeanor. The 74-year-old special counsel appeared confused at times. He sometimes had difficulty answering the most basic questions. He had difficulty forming complex sentences.

The Mueller at the witness table was a far cry from the Mueller who took over the FBI 18 years earlier. Colleagues remembered a man who was super sharp, on top of everything, a micromanager. Now, many of those watching were concerned.

“This is delicate to say,” former Obama aide David Axelrod tweeted, “but Mueller, whom I deeply respect, has not publicly testified before Congress in at least six years. And he does not appear as sharp as he was then.”

Mueller’s testimony was indeed a disaster. But Trump’s legal team was not surprised by what they saw. “More than a year earlier, at a meeting in April 2018, the president’s lawyers had gotten a disturbing look at Mueller’s condition. And even before that, they had cause to be concerned about Mueller’s possible cognitive issues and what those problems might mean for the special counsel investigation.”

The meeting took place on April 24, 2018. Rudy Giuliani had just joined Trump’s defense team. Attorney John Dowd had left the team, and two other white-collar defense lawyers, Jane and Marty Raskin, had joined. Given all those changes, it was decided that the new lineup should have a get-acquainted meeting with the Mueller team.

After opening niceties, the conversation turned to a number of legal topics and specifically to the longstanding opinion from the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel that a sitting president cannot be indicted. It was not an obscure or arcane issue. It was, in fact, perhaps the key legal question in the entire special counsel investigation. But Mueller could not recall it. The old Mueller, of course, would have known all about it. But on that day in April, the Mueller at the meeting could not remember. It was, to say the least, extraordinary that he could not discuss something so basic to the case.

“Bob said, ‘I’ll have to get back to you on that,'” recalled Giuliani, “and it was apparent that he didn’t know what we were talking about.” A Mueller staffer stepped in to cover for the special counsel, assuring the Trump team that the prosecutors knew about the issue and would get back to them. “There were a couple of other little facts that came up — it didn’t seem like he knew about them,” Giuliani remembered, “and [Mueller’s staff] would lean over and tell him.”

That was the last time anyone from Trump’s team had direct contact with Mueller. “Mueller’s staff built a protective wall around him. After that April 2018 meeting, no one from the Trump team could see Mueller or talk to him on the phone. When Trump lawyers called with some concern they wanted to address with Mueller, a top aide would listen, make some notes, and say, ‘We’ll take it to Bob.'”
