but even if never connected one could still use a usb fob to do stuff too, or other transport mechnism like install fro a DVD or CD or even . . . a tape drive interface.

I don't know enough about how video is verified, I am not part of that scene by design though I suspect that . . . there are ways to know if or if not a particular video is 'real' that are too secrete to even suggest (if I were someone under that stricture).
