Police confirmed the death of alleged gangster and drug lord Yaganathan Pillay – better known as Teddy Mafia – on Monday after a horrific sequence of events saw the Chatsworth resident shot in his home and his suspected killers beheaded by enraged community members.
In their statement on Monday, the South African Police Service (SAPS) said that “a shooting occurred at a known drug dealers home at Taurus Street in Shallcross”, and this has led many – including Police Minister Bheki Cele – to question how a criminal so familiar to law enforcement agencies could have been allowed to operate with such impunity.
Speaking to eNCA while visiting COVID-19 hot-spot areas along the Western Cape’s West Coast, Cele said that he has submitted a series of enquiries into the matter to provincial police agencies, but that foremost on his list of questions is how Pillay was able to continue his notorious decade-long spate of crimes with members of the SAPS so well aware that he was up to no good.
He [SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naiker] said that Pillay’s prior appearances in various courts in recent years led him to assert with confidence that he was indeed a “known drug dealer”, despite Pillay never having been formally convicted of charges relating to alleged drug or gang related crimes.
“He has been arrested and charged, freed on a bail on several occasions,” he said.
