These really do look like they were whacked with a bat or something. Not a punch, and not something from an internal source like surgery as some people had suggested.
In fact, we know how the pope got his because it was on TV. He hit his head on the window frame of the popemobile. The thing is, this could have been self-inflicted. If this is a punishment that satanists receive for failure, then the Pope is high enough in the hierarchy to have the privilege of doing it to himself.
It is believed that the Pope is ruled by a council of 13, so that would make sense. He has no single boss to punish him. All of the rest do have a boss in the satanic hierarchy.
